I have a 78 Bronco that has been with me since about 1998 or so. I bought it from a friend who was the original owner. While he head it, he drove it to Alaska and used it to tow a Pro Rally Mustang (Hairy Canary.) This past October, I drove it 600 miles from our cottage/camp in the UP of Michigan. The Bronco has served us well for many years, all the while suffering neglect of infrequent use. She now holds a special place in our family, as she has been with us as all three of our kids have grown up and they have all had the chance to drive "the Bronco".
So this will be the story of my extensive "maintenance" project.
Pictures to follow.
Here is one with the PO pulling one of the two Canary race cars:
So, here's the program:
Rust repair. Outsourced to friend to be performed this summer.
Everything leaks repairs. Gas tank is well underway.
Moving forward, rear pinion appears to be leaking.
NP205 appears to be leaking. Think I'll twin stick it while its out, just because I think it looks cool.
Engine/Trans - leaks and low oil pressure. 90K on the girl, more importantly, she's original except cam/intake/carb - which were all done long ago. 20-30 years ago by PO.
Looking to rebuild engine to address oil and wake her up. Following many good builds here to see what people are doing.
Otherwise, most everything I do will be about reliability and usefulness. I don't have a garage with a door taller than 7 foot, so that pretty much shoots any lift. I can post more pics of condition if it would be of interest.
Pick A Part for skid plate with a little less rust, but still need some touch up. Fortunately, my brother-in-law loves to weld and has a nice hobby shop at his house.
Doing as many indoor projects as possible during the extreme cold. Here is a pic of wheels getting a fresh coat of paint. After taking them down to bare metal. All five are now complete.
And a shot of the skid plate, ready for install with the new tank
Sticking with the vintage theme - here is a 1979 Bass Tracker (started production in 1978) to go with the Bronco! We refurbished this a few years back. Makes a nice Crappie rig!
Well, got a step closer to getting the gas tank back in this weekend. Cleared out some rust and got a coat of "encapsulator" in with some under coat on top of that.
You guys know if I need to put something on top of the new gas tank paint? I am inclined to just install it, but wondering if I should under coat it.
Also, does anyone have any ideas about getting a new gasket that goes between the fuel filler door assembly and the insid of the quarter outer? Mine fell apart when I pulled it out.
Anyone know how this trailer connector wiring goes?
I did not take pictures of how the loom was tucked up in there - I know this is not correct because the trailer plug was originally on the left side of the receiver.
Craftsman ATV jack was great for holding receiver up while bolting it up. Also great for skid plate/gas tank. Picked it up to help with R&R on the NP205 on sale for $80
I wanted to replace the fasteners when reinstalling my receiver hitch. I was shocked at the price of a fastener kit from e-trailer.com - $45 for 6 1/2 bolts. 4 of them simply carriage bolts through a small piece of plate steel to allow blind installation.
I just drilled a 9/16 hole in some scrap steel and pressed in 610-289 wheel studs. They'll do. $12 and done.
