that looks to me to be a rust induced hole vs a crack. if that's the case, its likely that just welding it wont take. cut out all rotten areas, and just plate/box the frame back to something solid (probably past that "low spot" that has collected dirt/salt/moisture all these years).

or just leave it alone....its not really holding much, just the front clip. but, in the event of a crash, that ear prob wouldn't absorb much impact.

That was my first thought too. It looks more like the frame is rusted through than an actual crack. You can't weld rust. Depending on the extent of the damage you'll have to cut away the rotted portion and find clean, solid metal to weld to.

If its rotted.. The gap is going to be pretty big once you get to clean metal...if the frame is not boxed.. I would weld a oversized plate on inside... Then weld and fill/bridge as much of the crack as you can from the outside... Grind smooth paint and admire your work....Good luck

Yes. And the most important thing is to always put the work clamp as close as possible to the area where you're welding to prevent stray currents from damaging anything. I've even left the battery connected and had the radio playing while welding on the cab using this method and ain't ever fried anything.
