Frame Repairs

My 94 Ranger has some rust through spots on the frame. I was looking for advice, techniques on how to do repairs. I cannot afford to replace the truck at this time so I have to try to nurse it along. How about welding in sections of good frame, welding reinforcing plates over weak areas? What shape should plates be so as not to crack the frame later? If a section of frame is replaced should I also use a reinforcing plate? Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated!

Its gonna depend on the area of rust, how extensive the rust, acess to the area for tools(grinder, welder) and also your DOT regulations pertaining to this. Some of it could be repaired with 1/8"-1/4" plate steel, angle iron or c channel.

I have some areas on my 77 F150 frame that have rust damage that I will be repairing by cutting out the rusted area and then welding in a piece of metal the same size and thickness of the one you removed. You should bevel the edges of the metal where you'll be welding, so that it forms a "V" where the two edges meet and then you will fill in the "V" in as you weld. This will make sure you get good penetration when you are welding thick metal. You then grind the weld bead flush with the surounding metal and then prime/paint and you will never know there was a repair made. Also remember to tack weld the patch in several places before you complete your welding, to keep the patch piece from moving on you. Good luck.
