I've never understood why people want to use starting fluid. I've owned 5 different diesel trucks, from a 6.5 turbo Chevy, two 7.3 IDI's, a 7.3 psd, and now a 6.0 and I've never even so much as thought about spraying starting fluid in any of them.
So youre not having any problems and youre worried?? so much that you might sell it??? Dude I towed a ton every day for who knows how long with blown head gaskets before I tore down to my heads. I replaced my hgs and found a bent push rod from trying to compress coolant. Replaced with new shorter pushrods. Ive got around 40,000m on it since then and I dog it every dam day. Honestly ive been on this site for a few years and never heard anyone HAVING to replace the motor due to something catastrophic. Don't worry so much dude these engines are a lot more resilient than you think. You think a duramax or cummins is gunna be better. Ya anything man made is gunna have its problems. Proper maintenance bro. Proper maintenance. Change coolant every year or two regular oil changes and filters. Ive heard of a powerstroke cummins and duramax going 800,000m with stock lower ends. Don't worry. Truck on
Got it I just worry too much and read to many horror stories about the 6.0s I've already replaced my heads too.
For some peace of mind, you could get an OBD2 bluetooth adapter ($25) and the torque pro app ($5) and monitor your engine on an android phone/tablet (plenty of good tablets available for $50-100 if you don't already have an android phone). Or I've heard there's an iphone equivalent app, but I know nothing about that. I use Torque Pro/Android.
That's what I keep hearing. I bought this truck and a month later had to put new heads on it.
Worst part is out of the way then--everything else is gravy. I assume you didn't do or weren't able to do a full run down on the engine with monitor before you bought it? Honesty I was lucky on mine. I got to do an initial test drive then was able to take it overnight from the dealer and hook the sg to it and start from scratch first thing the next morning and spend a few hours doing a full run down so I knew exactly what I was getting when I made the deal. I'd say on yours take a look at the tech folder and have a look at operating values and compare to what you are seeing on your monitor. This should give you piece of mind. If all else fails post up some data and the fellars here can set you at ease.
well i got some data on the way to work from my livewire. my ect and eot stay at or around 180. my tranny is around 165. icp is 500-600 at idline and never seen it go above 3000. ficm start up is 14. what else is important to monitor?
