After my almost stranding on Pa 84 I was talking with my wife on the way home on what might of happened if we had not got so lucky and made it to the service station with the truck. Traveling in severe weather can be a really bad experience and you should be prepared for anything. I'd make sure to have warm blankets and water on hand and maybe take a thermos with a hot drink in it. Flares would be a really good idea, that way someone would defiantly stop knowing you are broke down.(I know I would in that weather) Also a fully charged cell phone even if the signal is not strong or you are out of your providers area because sometimes the other carriers will pick up the signal. Tools would be nice too along with a change of filters and fluids and a one piece winter coveralls and card board to lay on(in the worst case you could use it to start a fire to stay warm) Also let people know when you are leaving and are expected to arrive, this way if you are in bad shape they can alert the troopers but most of all keep your head and think what the best and easiest fix is, worry about the cost later when you are safe and sound(I know you don't want to hear that but if even if it's running you have heat).......and most of all use your best judgement and don't take chances!
I tell my kids this pretty much every winter. They all have gotten flares for stocking stuffers in Christmases past. Some like to snow shoe and hike in the winter. I told them all, pack the flares in your back packs. If something happens, burn the freaking forest down, someone will find you.
