I have a 1985 F350 with the idi 6.9. On my group of wires going to the alternator I have a green and black wires with a plug that I can't seem to find where they're suppose to go.
If you're running the stock alternator there's only two wires; the large red one going from the terminal on the back of the alternator to either the starter relay or to the positive battery terminal dependine on how it's wired.
That single 'excite' wire going into the plug plugs into the socket on the alternator, the only place on the alternator that can accept a plug.

I believe an 85 would have an external regulator and more wires. Maybe someone upgraded it and left the old harness.
