i was planning on asking the same question. but more specifically what about stuff like engine mounts, bellhousings and front springs the only difference of mine is that it is for a 73 f250 highboy 4x4
The hardest part will probably be is finding the frame mounts for these year of trucks, 84 was the first year offered. Don't quote me on this But i've heard the 460 has the same frame mounts as the Diesel, But i'm unsure of it. As far as the easiest Diesel swap Would be the 6.9 orf the early 7.3's before turbo was added. After The 7.3/PSD It takes alot of the Wiring from inside the truck before the Motor will run, I read this on a post awhile back, Try doing a search on Diesel swaps i'm sure ya can find the one with all the wring info needed to swap in a Late model diesel. But the 6.9 with be the easist to do.
You need to be more concerned with beefing up the front suspension. That diesel weighs a lot. The 460 weighs about 760 pounds. The 6.9 weighs about 900 pounds and the 7.3 weighs even more.
yeah my choice would be the 6.9- mostly because i alredy know of one, but it needs a fuel pump ($$$ouch$$$) maybe i'll get lucky and find one on ebay or something. and that fordcummins.com is really usefull. thanks.
I picked up a 97 dodge cummins 12v turbo diesel at the local junkyard for 1000, a steal for that motor, gonna put it in a 79 f-250 supercab 4x4. They are great motors, just make sure you get a 12v motor, the 24v motors are computer controlled.
man, the only diesels that my local junkyard has is a 6.2 chev and a 6.9 (non powerstroke) the 6.9 is only like $400 but needs a fuel pump. and the next closest junkyard is like 40 miles away. it isn't the computer or electronics that scares me from a new engine, its just the price that people want for them! what would be best for me is if I could find a new superduty that was wrecked. then i could have front and rear axles that have disk brakes!

I built the mounts when I did my 6.9/ '75 highboy. I took the factory flat mount plate and built the rest. It bolted to existing holes in the frame. Use the diesel bell housing and whatever tranny you want. I started with the NP 435 but the gear spacing was wrong. I swapped in a BW T19D. It was from behind a diesel and worked well. It was a bolt in except for fabbing a t/c shifter mount.
The 6.9 was pretty gutless and if I were going to do it again with a Navistar engine, it would be an early PSD or a 7.3 IDI with the last choice being a 6.9. The 6.9's have smaller headbolts and are somewhat prone to headgasket failure. The block heater tends to crack the block if used improperly. Then there is our friend, cavitation erosion which is a factor in all of these engines.
The 6.9 and 7.3 weigh the same for all practical purposes.
I saved the mounts I built and the offer is still open. They are not pretty because I built them in place. I will give you the mounts, you just pay the freight. All I ask is that you make a dimensional drawing and post it in the public domain.

Last 6.9 pump I bought was ~$375 from Southwest Metrofuel. They are easy to change and you just time it by lining up the marks.
