I'm new to the site and tried to search for procedures to do rear brakes on an F250, but could not find any. I'm probably a little inept at searching, so forgive me if it's listed somewhere.
Is there a step by step procedure anyone has previously posted on the site for replacing the rear brakes? I have done rear drums on a '70 Chevy once, but I'm not quite sure I know what I'm doing on my '74 Ford. I'm mechanically inclined and would like to do this on my own, but I'm no expert, and just looking for a little advice and help.
Difficulties have been discussed here but I don't recall a specific step by step posted.
Purchase a Haynes manual for your truck. It has step by step instructions with illustrations. You can also purchase the OEM Ford shop manuals on CD thro our online store here.
Manuals for your truck will pay for themselves MANY times over if you keep your truck a few years.
I figured the brake pads and all of the springs/clips would be similar to how it is on the old '70 Chevy, but are there any major differences? I have heard that I may need to pull axles out to do the brakes on the 3/4 ton. Is that correct? If so, is it a straight forward thing, keeping in mind I've never done that before? My worry is that I don't think I know all the steps there is to doing rear brakes if it involves more than pulling the drum and replacing the assorted shoes, springs, etc.
Does anyone else know if I would need to pull out axles on my '74 3/4 ton when doing the rear brakes? If so, is it a fairly easy job for a guy with average mechanical ability? Are there any other differences in doing rear brakes on the Ford compared to a Chevy of the same vintage?
yes you will need to pull the axles out. and there are 2 nuts you will need to remove in order to pull the hub/drum assembly off ( like pulling the front hub off a 4x4 sorta) just be sure to jack one side up at a time that way you dont lose much gear lube. (some WILL come out) oh go get a hub socket for a rear d60 if you havent already
Thanks Okiebronco. Sorry for asking some dumb questions, but what is a d60? Keep in mind I've never worked on the rear end of any truck, or pulled apart the brakes on a Ford. That's why I was hoping someone out there had a rough step by step how-to on the rear brakes. Just don't want to miss a step and screw something up.
Is it the differential fluid that runs out when the axle is pulled? I plan on changing out the fluid anyway, so this would ok if it happened, right? Are there any special tools needed to get the hub off, and to also replace the wheel bearings?
Again, sorry for the novice questions. Just trying to get a plan of action in my head before starting the project.
d60 refers to a dana 60 rear end, the axle bearings will come off no problem it is the races that are pressed in that can be difficult for a first timer. i have done many races with a hammer and punch. the fluid will be gear lube coming out so if you are changing no big deal, 90wt for open rear end and 140wt for a posi rear. like they said do one side at a time or take some digital pictures, just make sure you get the star adjuster back in the correct way.
any more Q's just ask
