Has anyone experienced any of the ebay kits? Pros cons of the $100' ones vs the $350 k n N.Any one have any pictures of the set up? What are you guys doing with the stock air temp sensor housing??
(V10)
Everyone here says the stock setup flows more air than the engine can use at redline. Believing that, the biggest drawbacks to an aftermarket setup would be the waste of money, time and now ingesting more dirt into your engine. For me, another con would be lower resale value. I would pay less for a vehicle with aftermarket air setup due to increased wear and tear. But that's just me.. The only plus I could see is if you like intake noise.
I have the K&N intake setup. I`ve had it since the truck had 20k miles. has been working great! Never had an issue with dirt being ingested. I`ve been to the sand dunes with it in MI. the K&N definitely keeps the sand from going through. I~ve cleaned the MAF once at 50k miles just as a maintenance item along with the throttle body. I don`t know if it added more power, but I`m happy with it. I would buy one again. I even have a K&N replacement in the wifes minivan.
I've got the ebay kit on my V10. But upgraded it to a K&N with a prefilter. The kit was easy to install, didn't knotice much difference in intake sound. But I have exhaust that drowns a lot of noises out. Lol. The thing I don't like was that heat shield or the single rubber mount up by the filter. I added zip tires to the shield, and to the tube where the single mount is, because it cracked.

Hack out part of rad support for better air to the filter.
Taking out the radiator support like that is by far the biggest thing you can do to help the intake get cooler/better air. Start with that it's free
Running down the hwy, my air intake temp is usually within 1* of the outside temp. It's wierd when it's like -15* and you look at the air intake temp and its sitting right at the same temp. Makes me wonder how a throttle body doesn't freeze up.
I should take a pic of what I did to the stock filter housing on the Superduty. I cut the end of the filter "snout" off to make the intake hole bigger before the filter.

I could only speculate that the colder air has less moisture in it so no water can build up. That along with the motor vibration and the constant although EXTREMELY small changes at highway speeds in throttle position keeps it free.

Different results from what my filter did after a trip to the Ocean beaches. MAF was covered. At that point I removed it and the filter is still on the counter in the garage.
Best thing I have done though is probably the ZOODAD mod. With the scanguage my temps are real close to ambient, like hav24wheel said previously.
All cars have a cold air intake from the factory. It's just not as efficient with all the little bends and kinks in it! And the filter while very good just doesn't flow as well as the K&N. No I'm not citing K&N's charts. And mine isn't shiny it flat black plastic. The shiny metal ones are the worst as they act as a heat sink. Try touching one after you've been in a hwy. extremely hot. The plastic one (aftermarket or stock) is just warm.
Have run K&Ns for 20 years on every vehicle I've owned with zero issues.
Most of these were offroad vehicles. With a prefilter, they're super easy to
maintain. I keep two, one in the vehicle, one washed, preoiled, and ziplocked.
I have found it's worth the extra $ to not have to wash, dry, and reoil in same day.
But is there a benefit on the X? More HP? Throttle response? If the stock intake and filter outflows the engine at WOT what benefit could there possibly be? Not trying to be difficult, just genuinely curious.
