Front hub problem

Front hub problem


I have a drag/click coming from my front wheel. I had thecaliper off so it was definitely in the hub assembly. I went ahead and greasedthe hub through the ABS sensor but the drag/click was still there. I amthinking it is either the wheel bearing or the axle bearing. My question is ifI lock the hub and the drag/click goes away does that mean it is the axlebearing? Also, is it possible the auto locking hub could be part of the problem?<o></o>

By the way, my Ex has 130K on it and the 4x4 auto selectworks fine. There is no play in the hub and no noise that I can hear. The onlyreason I am digging into this is a drop in gas mileage that led me to find outthat both front wheels are very tough to rotate (with the front drive disengaged).<o></o>

So when you lock the hubs, the wheels turn easier? I would remove the hubs and inpect for broken parts.

My esof hubs recently failed to disengage properly. Even manually they would stay partially engaged enough to click and or turn the axle. I have a set of mile markers in the garage waiting on me. Also, there are bearings in these locking hubs that get noisy even on a functioning hub. Mine have been clicking for about a year now at low speeds.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to remove the locking hubs as a diagnostic step. Spin the wheel before & after. You can also examine the hub to see if it's locked, open or partially engaged.
I'd recommend examining the axle u-joints while spinning before taking anything apart.

Its the hub ...

I was able to lock the hub this weekend and the "click" went away,but turning it was not substantially easier. I went ahead and ordered theseal/retaining clip set from DieselOrings.com and plan on cleaning/lubing thehubs next weekend.<o></o>
