Hello to all,
Well my old flathead v8 is giving up the ghost in my 53 f250.
Has anyone had any experience putting a newer 4.6l (1999 to present) motor in? I see it has quite a bit of stuff for the computer, just wondering if I really need it all. Any ideas?
I have experience with the fuel injection and the computer, I put an 84 302 with TBI in a 51 once.
Thanks all\
BIll
Talk about a helleva swap, those motors have so many electrical componets I wouldn't even know where to begin. There's no distributor, its all electronic. You got MAF's, tps(throttle postition sensor) o2sensors. You'd have to have a parts car to bring home and strip out the parts. The nice way would be to leave as much stuff coupled to the motor, and just stick it in the truck then mount all the crap. But, the end result is worth alot of trophies and really sets you above the crowd. If your going to do the swap, at least get the 4.6DOHC! Are you looking for an absolute show stopper, or just a fuel injected motor? I know non-of this is of any help but hey.... -4speed
Yes, its a hell of a project but I figure, hey why not, its probably available in the recycling yard@!!!!! I just thought it would be more fun than a plain ole 302 fuel injected swap!!!

Go for it! I say use a 5.4 triton V8 out of 1999+(P.I heads after 99) F-150! There a dime a dozen in a salvage yard. If you do decide to do the swap make sure to keep us updated. This is another project I've always wanted to see done. -4speed
I would stick with the 302/351 fuel injection swap. The aftermarket support for the 5.0 and 5.7 is much larger (you can even get the wiring harnesses from the aftermarket). There are a lot of books on the subject, plus tons of support via the internet.
Ford switched to the modular motor (4.6 & 5.4) so that they could meet tougher emissions standards (built into the design). Its also cheaper for them to produce as they use a lot of plastic parts (even the intake manifold is plastic).
You are also going to limit yourself on tranny choices.
If you go the 4.6 route, I'd agree with 4Speed: get the harnesses and computer stuff attached then just find places under the hood to attach it all in some semblance of order. The computer will actually afford you a lot more of the "creature comforts" (i.e., PW, PDL, alarm, remote start, etc) than trying to piece together a wiring harness that will accomodate all the goodies you want to add to your truck.
Other combo's will work, too, don't get me wrong. However, if you're dead set on the 4.6 route, get it en masse with EVERYTHING attached if possible. That'll save the headache of having to mix and match later...
I saw a 4.6L in an F-100 last August at the Ramage Run in Ocean Shores WA. It was from police car (Crown Vic) I believe. I don't remember his name but the guy did a great job. I'll have to see if I have some images of it. He used the original computer and harness and the AOD trans. Its supposed to run great with good drivablility and lots of power. Its a very wide engine and it really draws the second looks. Definitely not the same 350/350.
Half Ton,
Would very much appreciate your posting of any pics or info on the 4.6 installation you saw. Am researching a 4.6 install into a 56 F100 now and can use all the help I can get.
