Under engine fabric cover

Wondered how long it was going to last. Little shy of 3 years in my case. I've been seeing it hang down and putting it back up 3 days in a row. Just won't stay up any longer. I'm taking it off permanently.

I wonder if its there to make the turbos quiet or if its for aerodynamics, or is it for splash protection, I think for acoustics.

I don't it's for splash protection as it's so far back behind the engine. I think it aids in aerodynamics.

It's a heat shield for the engine/transmission and only put-on the F-150s with the EcoBoost engine.

That is the only sensible explanation I've ever heard. Thank you.

Heat shield? Shielding what from what?? It has to be acoustics. We had the same debate about the hot-side pipe from the turbo on the 7.3. People kept saying it was for heat, but it was because people bitched about turbo whistle.

I took mine off too.

When you go on WWW.Fordparts.com and enter the number that Joe gave us, it lists it as a cover for $144.00. Not saying it's not for heat shielding, just repeating the nomenclature.

In my mind it will only shield things from the cats as the cover mounts aft of the engine.

I bet it's to prevent a fire hazard. There's a lot of heat coming off the turbos, park the truck in tall grass and you may come back to a charred wreck.

The extreme heat isn't in the turbos. It's in the cats. And since ALL vehicles have cats (not just the EB), I tend to doubt that. Although, it might be a good side benefit, as I have seen the results of a jeep with cats getting stuck over dried cat tails. Result was a charred mess...

I believe it's acoustic, as Ford (and all other manufacturers) are being hammered with emission requirements (to include engine noise), as well as caving to morons complaining about a turbocharged engine actually SOUNDING like a turbocharged engine.

Just passing on what I've learned from past encounters with this. I'll shut up now.

I would have sold it a long time ago if I knew it was worth that much!

I took mine off after the 3rd oil change because I couldn't stand messing with it anymore...no change to mileage just easier to access the truck's tender underbelly.

So is the turbo whistle louder? I'm fine with leaving it if there's no change since in theory it should help with fuel economy, and I don't find it that annoying to remove for oil changes. If I could actually hear the turbos it'd be worth removing.

Had a thought yesterday, perhaps it's to keep cold water from splashing on two glowing-hot turbos. I imagine a cold water bath caused by hitting a deep puddle is a fast way to destroy a turbo or two.

Could be my imagination, but when I remote-start, it seems like I can hear them more. I have an S&B intake, but stock exhaust (for now).

Maybe on the water thing. But if they were that sensitive, I doubt we'd be able to see them through the wheel wells. Having completely built & customized the turbo on my old truck, I can tell you the exhaust housings are pretty stout. And they ARE water-cooled turbos after all.

No. There was no change.

Guys, I don't know if you've ever put together the clues or not, but you need to pay closer attention to what gdDMJoe does for a living. I'm going with Joe on this one. If he says it is a heat shield then that is what it is.
