New Ex Owner

Last summer I purchased my 2001 4x4 v10 excursion with 50,000 miles.
Absolutely loving it but want to make some improvements. I have driven it trouble free for 8 months and 20,000 miles, but have seen mileage drop from 11.5 to 10.6 without explanation. any ideas? also it seems to make a little racket with 87 octane and sounds perfect with supreme gas. what does that mean?

So far I have added 2" front shackle lift to level things out.
installed longer wipers
new roof rack installed
new exhaust

My next projects are:
new shocks - Bilstein?
new tires - wild country mud tires 285-75-16
new steering stabilizer

should ball joints be an issue yet? don't really know what to look for there.

looking forward to using the forum to keep things running for a long time.

I'd bet the "racket" you are hearing on 87 octane is pinging (pre ignition, detonation). If it goes away with higher octane fuel, that's yer culprit. Either buy the higher grade gas or try a different brand.
I read somewhere that with the little, fuel efficient cars, adding a roof rack or driving with a bike on the roof hit the fuel mileage by something crazy.. 10% or more. Not that our Exs are that aerodynamically clean, but maybe that affected it too. Of course, your gas pedal is the biggest cause of poor mileage.
