i have a 3 on the tree, i read a post about shifting without the clutch once you get moving. ive done that on a four wheeler but never on my truck. is there any special technique to it? is it hard on the trans?
It's called "floating gears".
To shift up a gear, take your foot off the gas, pull the lever out of gear, let the RPM's drop about 400-500, and put the lever into the next gear.
To down shift, take your foot off the gas, pull the lever out of gear, rev the engine 400-500 RPM's, and put the lever into the lower gear.
It takes practice.
Why would you want to not use the clutch. It's there use it. Am I not seeing something here. I would rather replace a worn clutch than strip the gears in my tranny trying to do something like this. But I gues it is your vehicle and you can do what you want with it.
Broke a gearset once just limping to the shop with a frozen clutch. What you will do, besides rounding off the dogs on the gears, is burn up the synchromesh clutches.
Motorcycle trannies tolerate this abuse better - they have no synchromesh and more dog play.
