So I know this is getting ahead of myself here, but if, after adjusting the timing, the noise doesn't go away, how bad would it be to change just the #7 & #8 injectors? I want to get some known good injectors from idiperformance.com but I also need to take the truck on a trip this weekend and the only injectors I think I can get until then are some off brand remans that I am not sure about. I am thinking that it would be better to have those two cylinders retarded (due to fresher injectors) instead of knocking, right?

Before you star pulling nozzles, (their not actually injectors, true injectors build their own high pressure, ie Cummins PT system or power stroke system) get your pump checked first, [ before you pull the pump, try this additive ( ATF will lube but this stuff is magical ) "Diesel Mate Clear" from Certified Labs out of Texas, Google will find them for you ] be sure to line timing marks on gears before you remove it, if it is not building enough pressure to those nozzles it will cause them to knock, should be able to pick up a reman for around $500 or so, I have a 94 IDI Turbo with 250000 on original nozzles, reman pump made them "pop" a lot quieter, if you notice when you service it, it will seem to knock until all the air works out of the system, for what it's worth, don't claim to know everything, but been wrenchin for 35 yrs

You can try swapping the problem injector with another one, ie swap 4 with 7 or so to verify it is the injector. If it is go to a JY and grab an injector or two, make sure theyre not wet on the end and dont have an unusual amount of carbon on them and throw it in until you get your new set. I wouldnt bother with getting a remand injector unless you get a whole set, but thats just me.

The reason my timing jumps is due to the pump being extremely tired i think. 265k on the original. Couldve been the guys adapter, sure, but either way the pump is still way tired so i decided not to even bother trying to set it with not being able to get a good reading.

So I tried re-timing it, after a couple of tries I got it to 5*, will try some more tomorrow to get it to 6*. The knocking sound didn't change though. I will try swapping injectors tomorrow also. An interesting thing I noticed is that all all the passenger side injectors except #7 have gray pain on them while #7 is black. I didn't look at the drivers side, but I am suspecting that those might have been replaced before / reman'ed injectors. It seems strange to me that most of the injectors might be the originals while the pump looks like it was replaced at one point (since it has a diesel shop's sticker on it).

My truck's timing was severely retarded when I bought it, 3 or 4 degrees after top dead centre. It started fine and idled fine but ran like crap and got terrible mileage.

Painted injectors are likely original, non could be a new or reman, your injectors need service, regardless of the pump condition. The pump builds the same pressure for all cylinders, the nozzles open when the pressure reaches what the nozzle is set / worn to.

I just replaced the pump on my dually, the on I took off had the advance not functioning, no matter where the timing was it would float back to "static". It was a pig, it wouldnt gain speed on any little hill ,just blow smoke. With new pump advance works as it should, pulls the hills, much less smoke. holds at 8.5 when setting.
