VIDEO/AUDIO: V10 6.8L 119K - After 5 minutes of idle it ticks/knocks
2000 Excursion V10 6.8L 119K 4x4
- Whisper quiet when I first start it
- 5-8 minutes later it ticks
- sounds like it is coming from the bottom of motor (it is loud in the wheel wells)
- tick speeds up when I accelerate
- No check engine codes / Runs excellent
I've heard it can be:
exhuast manifold leak
rod knock
lifter tick
loose spark plug
timing chain tensioner
What do you guys think? Does a rod knock really go away when the oil is thiucker and come back after idling for 5 minutes?

I took mine in to have my dealer look at it back in 2000. It was making the same noise still new and under warranty. Two days later I went by to check on progress and they had my whole transmission out of it. I was mad to say the least! A couple of days later they called me to come pick it up and it was still making that noise. They said that they performed some service bulletin and that they couldn't identify exactly what was causing the knocking. I literally shouted at the service rep that it wasn't oil slapping together and that I expected it have it fixed. Basically said to me that when the motor crashed "then" bring it back. I have 190k on the odometer today and it is still making that noise.
Another problem that I have had to deal with is periodic hard "jerk" shifts.
