In my engineers mind I have some major issues with this (based upon what little I know). If my team came to me and said boss we got this aDaptive cruise control and in order to work it depends upon it seeing the lines in the road in order to work...WTH you guys crazy, what about when it rains, or snow, mud and just has not been painted since the 3 wise men walked that way, what happens then?

Cannot see the folks over in Legal letting it out the door...
My engineers mind says the same thing. My fireman's mind also doesn't buy the argument that this type of tech saves lives.

I've already been on scene with vehicles that have this tech and would argue that the accidents are worse....and a lot more involved in scope and magnitude.

I will continue to rely on sound driving skills and techniques rather than a system that will fail (only a matter of time) or worse yet give false positives or false senses of control.

As someone who developed mission critical systems and every system I developed and I was the Chief Architect, I did a PFA (point of failure analysis). Any data that comes from an outside input already gets a minus (-) sign as a point of failure.

I would sure like to see the PFA on such a system as the adaptive cruise and see how the PFA(s) are mitigated....I have a suspicion there are lawyers all over the US drooling at the mouth to go after the car makers on this...if McDonalds can get sued for a cup of coffee, you can only imagine what this will bring.

Speaking of which: Sometime ago there was a guy who ran and did strong man competitions. He was looking for a way to get a better work out while carrying loads. He bought a used fridge, and got a set of seat belts for a car. Strapped the fridge to his back with the seat belts. He takes off on a run and the seat belt gives way, fridge falls on him, crushes his legs and knees, he will never run again...

He SUES the auto company, seat belt mfg and the maker of the fridge...He WINS!

Makes me think of the air France plane that crashed due to ice crystals in the pitot tubes sending false air speed to the pilots. The pilots kept trying to increase speed cause of the bad data the computers were getting.

Our trucks can't even tell if a egt sensor is bad but yet we are excited about a car that can make speed changes built on the same platform?

They won't need to know how to drive - the world is changing.

States that allow driverless cars public road testing. In addition, a law proposed in Texas would establish criteria for allowing autonomous motor vehicles.
