JAKE BRAKE
VGT's for the light duty truck market (US) I think first showed up on the Duramax around 2004.
VGT's can eliminate the need for a waste gate.
Banks Engineering took the system and figured out how to make the truck slow down easier as well as go faster.
Their "Speed brake" was a palm pilot controlled manipulation of the shifting parameters and the turbo vanes.
The Banks Speed Brake in use was like throwing out the anchor if you were on level 3 (of 3) and had no load.
GM saw it and implemented as standard for the Dmax. Cummins now doing the same.
AFAIK, Ford has not used the turbo vanes for braking until the 2015 model year, 11-14 involved dumping exhaust gas into the intake, nothing more then glorified EGR. There is nothing I can find in print that defines the turbo being used for engine braking in the 2011-2014 model years
BD apparently was working on a add on similar to the Banks Speed Brake, but as of last August engineering has stopped.
Lots of decent videos on youtube showing how the VGT actually works.
Looking forward to see what the 2016 model year brings to the table in the F450 lineup. Because I could really use a working engine/exhaust/turbo brake. Doesn't matter what it is called or how it operates, as long as it does.
