no forward or reverse

2000 ranger v6 automatic trans electronic 4wd shift on the dash. Plowing snow all of the sudden lost both forward and reverse never slipped or made any noise. Transmission fluid is fine to the level and clean. Put in drive nothing and reverse nothing put it back in park you can hear the park paul trying to click in. Towed it back to the shop thinking maybe the transfer case was junk. Decided to check the actuator on the transfer case no power going to it, go back to the switch no power there either check the fuses both are good and have power. The question i have is could a bad GEM module cause all this? ps the windshield wipers do work.

Thanks any help or advise is appreciated

Update. Removed the shift motor on the transfer case manually moved the linkage into two wheel drive. Truck moves again in both drive and reverse. Bench tested the shift motor worked fine, still no power at switch or transfer case. I guess it's time to start throwing parts at it. New to the ranger fte not the super duty fte

Thanks for the diagrams, looks like possibly a bad gem, I'll run some tests tomorrow

4x4 control module in my 2002 went out on me some years ago, when I needed it of course. Confirmed mine was bad by turning key to run position and "4x4hi" and "4x4lo" cluster indicators didn't briefly light on self test. Not sure if that test would apply to your 2000.

I wired some toggle switches into the defective module so I could manually operate the transfer case motor while I was waiting for a replacement module. If you do that though be careful you could easily screw something up.

The dash lights do light up briefly. But no power anywhere but the fuses. My super duty has the shifter on the floor I wish this was the same.

All fixed. Broken wires at the plug under the drivers seat under the truck. Can't believe broken wires put the transfer case in a neutral position and left the guy driving it stranded for a while. Seems like kind of a unique problem but I hope this helps someone some day.

Thanks again
