Just got it back from the dealership and as my luck goes they couldnt find it. They said that it made the noise for just a second but not long enough to find what was causing it. Taking it back in thursday morning because it is supposed to get down to -6 F wednesday night.
That's my biggest issue with taking it to the dealer. One, I can't be without my truck as it's my only commute vehicle, and two, I'd have to leave it over night to cold soak so they could hear it. If I drove it down in the morning, it would be fully warmed up by the time I got there, and the whole thing would end up a waste of time.
I may try to arrange for a Saturday appt, and leave it at the dealer Friday night.
I talked to the tech today that looked at my truck and he also has a superduty with the 6.2. He said that his has always made the noise too and that he wasnt ever able to figure out what was causing it and has since given up on it. He said that he thinks it has something to do with the air intake.
mine did it a few times the second winter I had the truck. Dealer kept it over the weekend and after hearing the noise they called ford. Ford said it's the cold air being drawn in through the intake. Funny thing is the truck didn't make the noise the first winter and hasn't made it since I had it looked at.
My "whine" has not returned.
That said, it hasn't been all that cold here this year.
Is your truck still making that noise? My truck has been doing that for 2 years. only when its cold. I took serpentine belt off and idler pulley seems bad so I will try replacing it.
Just replaced both idler pulleys on mine, only one was making a noise but I wanted to make sure as we are going south in 3 weeks. It made a squeeling noise at 1,000 rpm and a high pitched zip noise when given gas. Mine started after 5 to 10 minutes of driving. Its first actual repair done on it in 90,000 km mostly towing our fifth wheel.
Tip: I use a length of hose (clear plastic or water hose or whatever) and put one end onto your ear and other end on the power steering pump or idler pulley while the engine is running and your should be able to hear where the problem is coming from..
If you want to narrow it down between rotating assembly and intake you can take the belt off and start it. No noise and you can look closer at the front end of the engine. Mine was the power steering pump. Mind you at -35 I'm more worried if things don't make noise. Between the AC pump and the power steering pump I have just gotten use to listening to scary noises when starting my truck cold. Have a GMC as well and it is better starting in cold but that is about it...
Power steering pump... I have had 3 6.2 F150s and it was all the same issue. Have a look at the power steering fluid level... i bet it shows "low". Once I made sure the level remained regular, the whine in the cold went away.
Anyone else had a constant whine/squeal from their 6.2? I have a 2011 F250 6.2 that whines/squeals constantly. It is RPM dependent, so it goes higher as RPM's go up.
Dealer claims it is the idler pulley, but I'm not sure about that. I saw this thread title and wanted to subscribe in case the answer is here to be flushed out. Haven't yet read every reply in this thread. Thanks.
Most likely idler pulley, sounds the same as one of mine did. I had both replaced as preventative measure as I am going cross country for 3 weeks pulling the rv.
