Well this is what I've found out so far...I don't know if it's all true but I'm sure someone will jump in if it's not.
The F150's were offered with the 300ci straight six and the 302 and 351 V8's. All fuel injected. You could get both the 300 and 302 with a 5-spd manual, the 351 came with an automatic only (afaik). Generally, the 5-spd will be the Ford/Mazda M5OD, but in some very RARE instances, I've heard of people getting the ZF 5-spd, but only behind the 300 and usually in a 2wd regular cab longbox base/work model. The Mazda transmission doesn't have a reputation for being particularly robust (the towing capacity is greatly reduced when equipped), however I've got one in my 97' F150 4.6 with 190k miles and it's still going strong, even towing the occasional 6k lbs trailer. As for automatics, they are generally the E4AOD, an electronically controlled 4-spd OD transmission. I haven't owned an automatic Ford, so I have no personal experience with these. Borg Warner transfer cases, BW1356 if I recall correctly. Been around for ages and plenty stout.

geez, I thought I over paid when I was forced to finance the truck for 5K and bought it from a C***vy dealer...but meh...as for if thats a good truck, I would look at all the basics, sparks, oil, trans, test drive it, the whole works, if you plan to do lots of highway driving take it on the highway and test it out, try to test it in what ever type of environment you plan to use it in (if you plan on lots of highway driving take it on the highway, if its a city truck do a drive in the city where its stop and go traffic, try to test it in the same conditions your planing on subjecting it to on a normal basis)
also if you do test it make sure you test EVERY thing, all features, AC, trans, OD, 4x4 (if equipped, be sure to test all modes 4H, 4L, and N settings) this will help catch any surprises before they become just that...nasty surprises... also befure to check the leaf springs and other parts of the suspension, if its been a work truck I can say theres a certain likelyhood its been somewhat ragged on (my truck was even though it was in good condition) but an inspection caught a few things that would have been costly if missed.
Oh and on a side note, the "mild accident" has me a bit concerned, I would definatly check the entire front end and make sure when (if you do) you test drive it besure it has NO alignment issues, if it pulls to either side (left or right) when you take your hands off the wheel (or hold the wheel centere to go down the road) you may have other underlying issues involved, besure to check the frame and any other obvious areas for bent metal, especially the frame its self.
and I hope that helps! good luck and happy hunting for your dream truck!!!

NOT a ZF5, the shift pattern is wrong, you can see the **** in one of the pics. Nor were they available in that truck. It is an M5OD, a fine transmission for that truck.
As for the price, sure seams high, but when you get down to it not completely unreasonable. How many short box regular cab 4wd v8 manuals can there be on the east coast in decent condition. Vs. How many want a truck like that, that truck is indeed somewhat rare and in high demand. No way on earth I'd pay that kind of money for it, you can get a good crew cab f350 5 speed diesel 4wd for that. But if you have to have a short v8 manual OBS, you're going to pay for it.

Yeah thanks for the advice but I bought my 97HD last year and my 150 Platinum a few weeks ago so it was not in my budget but my bro in law was interested. I Figured I would ask the professionals before I told him to even look at it.
I was sure that the ZF5 claim was bogus but hey he said he was a Ford Truck Enthusiast?!

oh wow i didn't even see the price.9 grand? that's ludicrous.9k will buy way more truck than that.that's a 1500-2k truck if he paints the unmatched body panels.with the 302 in it,im being very kind (stick shifts don't help resale either, despite the few thousand who think otherwise that hang out here lol.) the low miles are ok but it's still old and it's still deprecated.
hop back on GL and search for 9k price ranged vehicles.you'll see that one doesn't belong in that price range very quickly.
