So, I just recovered my wife's Grandfathers old 1979 F250 Custom 2wd; and it's going to need a lot of work! It's been sitting for about 7 years.
The truck has the 460 motor, with the stock Holley carb.
My question is about carburetors. The last time it ran, the carb was apparently spewing gas which caused a small fire under the hood.
So, in addition to replacing all the vacuum lines and plug wires that were melted, I'm replacing the carb. I thought I'd put an Edelbrock 600CFM carb on, but I'm unsure of the correct model that would be the best fit.
Can anyone give me some direction on this? I'd like for it to be as close a fit as possible so I won't need to change the manifold if possible.
An Edelbock 1405/1406, Holley 4160, or a Summit-branded 600 to 650 cfm carb will do that 460 just fine.. stick with vacuum secondaries for the street. "Double pumper" sounds good while bench racing, not so good on the wallet or MPGs.
You call on choke... manual or electric, you decide.
Thanks for the advice... I'll probably go with the 1406 with the Elec. Choke. I won't be racing or anything like that; so this should work just fine for an around town driver
When replaced my stock one, I had some issues. I went with a Holley 4160 so you may not have the same problems. Don't know how much you lost in the fire but: I had to get a 1/2" carb spacer because the manifold vacuum ports on the new carb rested right on the egr plate. I had to combine some manifold vacuum lines related to emissions/pcv by using some tees. Also I had to order a kick down linkage extension from Holley. I know edelbrock sells one as well. I had to shorten the extension because of the change in geometry due to the spacer plate. Some or none of the info may apply to you, just trying to help you not have the same issues I did.
Good luck. I dont know for sure on the spacer, but I would bet money you need the extension. They are less than $10: advise buying one when you order the carb. Also note it if you go electric choke that the factory plug for electric is 7.5v and the new choke might require 12v.
