Another Hard Starting 6.9

My 83 6.9 is getting awful picky about starting with these cold temps. It does have 170,000 miles on it. I usually have to run the glow plugs 3 or 4 times between cranking to get it to fire. And when it does it starts off at a very very low idle like just faster than the starter for a few seconds then comes to life. But it fires right up as long as the motor is warm from the block heater or from running. It had new orings and return lines back in november and 2 brand new 950cca batteries. Ive even tried heavy doses of centane booster. Is there anything you guys can think of I might be overlooking?

Are all the glow plugs working, are they cycling long enough. Does it start OK if you plug it in. If so I would check the glow plug system. Just some thoughts hope it helps!

Just noticed you said it started ok if warm from block heater. So i would think probably something in the glow plug system.

And it does cycle ok they stay on for about 10 seconds then click on and off. I have to run them once then turn the key on and off 3 or 4 times since the light will click on for a brief second. I may have to do this 2 or 3 times before she starts.

I'd still check the GPs, it sounds like a couple of them are burnt out. Like Chris said, if it's starting good on the block heater that rules out fuel problems and leaves the glow plugs as the culprit.

Ok, that wont be too big a deal to do. Ive always tested them with them in the motor unhooked with the light tester to the pos. battery terminal and the spade on the glow plug. Is this a reliable way or should i pull them out?

That's the quick and easy way. Obviously if it doesn't lite up it's dead, but apparently a plug can be suspect and still pass the light test, an ohm meter is supposed to be the more accurate way. I don't recall the values, but they're in the glow plug FAQ.
