Hello. While performing a brake job on a '93 4WD F250, I am dealing with removing front rotors in order to have them cut (i.e. rectified). I have not been able to remove the manual locking hubs. After taking out both inner and outer clips, there is a part with splines which slides in and out on the spindle, up to a certain point but it would not come out. I assume it is part of the locking hub, for I haven't reached the spindle nuts yet. I wish I could post a picture to show it better. Any idea on how to get it out, please?
Thanks for your time.
Rayner.
Take a couple of the little screws that hold the cap on, thread them back into the hub body, and use them to pull the hub out. Sometimes the axle shaft puts some sideways pressure on them and makes em harder to pull out.
Did you take the retainer clip off the end of the axle? And there is a big retainer clip that goes around the inside of the hub, not on the hub itself where you took the allen head screws out of, but out side of that.
May be I didn't express myself properly: once you remove the cap and the outer retaining clip, the manual locking hub seems to comprise three parts:
1- an outer gear, bearing the threads for cap screws on its side.
2- an intermediate gear, inside part depicted in 1
3- an inner most piece that slides on the spindle, and it is held in place by the retainer clip at the end of the axle.
I have taken out parts 1 and 2 with no problem. After removing the retainer clip (i.e. the one around the shaft), for some reason part 3 refuses to come out. It is not stuck, for it slides along the axle about 1/4", but I don't see what holds it.
Sad that I can't post pics yet. It would clarify the whole thing in a blink of an eye.
Thanks for your time, folks.
