I was always happy with my rear folding seat in my '90 S/C --- and my pooch was happier yet after I installed the lift kit! The seat cushions almost never saw the light of day after that!! 
I was quite disappointed with the rear seat when I got my new '05 S/C but my new(er) pooch has learned to live with it as well.
I haven't looked at the newest S/C to see if Ford returned to a "good thing"!!
