Exhaust question

Greeting everyone!

Recently bought a 1995 F-150 XL 5 speed with the powerful 4.9L engine from my father, with only 86000 miles. Super truck, only that it guzzles too much gas Have a question in regards to the exhaust system. The truck seems to have an exhaust leak somewhere, only that I cannot pinpoint where the leak is. At idle, even if you push on the gas, you cannot hear it. You only hear it when you're accelerating on the road. Even with the truck is coasting, you don't hear it. Even in neutral as the truck is coasting and you press the gas pedal, you do not hear it. Only when the engine has a load on it, you hear the sound. No other way to describe the sound, only that it sounds like an exhaust leak. I was thinking the exhaust manifold itself may have a leak somewhere. My father had the intake/exhaust manifold gaskets replaced a few years back, but that didn't help. Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Exhaust question

I know of which you speak Dan. It only occurs under heavy acceleration correct? Their have been many inquiries about this little sound on this forum and others. I'm sorry to say I have not figured it out on my own truck yet. My suspicion is that we are hearing air trying to be forced the length of that big monster head which is too restrictive at stock. When you add the carbon buildup over the years and many miles the restriction gets worse.
One suggestion is it coming out of the little round tube rail that rides just above your exhaust manifolds but this requires removing the EFI system to get a full visual check. I won't remove all that until I have a rebuilt P&P head to put on.

Sorry I'm not much help but at least you know your not alone on this.

Thanks for the insight, Mike. Yes, you can really hear it when you accelerate the truck. I was thinking of taking it to the local Ford dealer and have an exhaust specialist check it out to get a second opinion, and oder the part(s) necessary to fix this. From the looks of it, it may turn out to be a weekend job. Since I'm new here, are there many aftermarket performance accessories for the 92-96 4.9L engine line?

Exhaust question

no.

seriously, i'm not joking. I think three companies make headers. thats it.

i think there's also a chip, which probably wont do much unless you have many aftermarket parts. but uh... there's only two.

You can get a filter kit... and an exhaust... but thats about it.

It sucks. But at least you get the experience from your own, and from suggestions from the guys on FTE, crazy idea mods.

welcome to the forum!

If you still can't find the leak, you can try spraying some grey primer around suspect areas and drive it around then come back and look for the black soot that shows where the leaks are. This worked for finding the leaks around my headers. The motor needs to be cold when you spray the primer and you might want to clean any oil or grease off so you can see things better and the paint has a chance to stick.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may try the gray primer and see where that takes me. That's too bad there aren't too many mods out there for the I-6 Right off hand, how much would an OEM exhaust manifold run? I still have a gut feeling this may be the culprit.

Exhaust question

it's common for the stock manifold to crack, so i wouldn't be suprized.

I think there was an EFI manifold that sold for something like $150 on ebay.

Exhaust question

It's probably coming from the air injection tube's, replaced mine on saturday, cost me $150.00 for the setup, little tip,if your going to do it your self make sure you get all 6 of the tube crimpers, there the parts that you slide the assembly into and tighten down,I had to cut the tubes on mine in order to get it apart because the tubes freeze up inside them, also might as well do your v\c gasket while your there.

Thanks for the info. Prior to replacing this tube, did your truck sound similar to what I described above? That sound is annoying. It's to the point I crank up the music and A/C just so I will not hear it.

Yup it did, I found the leak by having some one throttle up the engine,I used a long piece of vac hose, found the leak at the back tube by the injecter, when i took it apart I found it had been leaking at 3 of the 6 tubes, the stock tubes are not welded on to the main tube, but the new one i got was, ford new about the problem and updated the replacement part.

WOW! Again, thanks for the info. I will definitely give this a shot. If you don't mind, can you list the parts that you purchased for this repair, and what tools are needed? I do not have my shop manual on me right now.

hi.

i've got the same problem on my '91 f150
mine is leaking at the rear of the air injection tube on one of the barrels
i was gonna try some jb weld to see if that might fix it.

i was quoted $650 for the repair and just can't see going for that...
anyone ever try just patching the leak once it is pinpointed ?
i would love to not have to take off all of the injection, etc.

what would hold up to the heat ?
