So I'm contemplating picking up this trailer this week, though I'm going to look at it today. Says needs work due to water leak so that may just be a turn away for me. Just depends on the work it needs and damage from water which is never good. It's 2004 so not extremely old and most if not can be fixed or replaced. I did notice corner shot of drivers side roof damaged and moulding near bottom so that could be some issues. Asking price is a bit higher than I will pay so guy told me he would want me to come see it in person and then make offer. He will take his best offer so we shall see.
I'm not going to go into asking stuff about the trailer because I know this is not the place for that but I do want to ask if anyone has this particular trailer and they pull it with there Ex.
My current setup is 2000 Ex 4x4, V10, 100,000 miles, lifted with 4" and 35" tires. Believe it to be original gearing but not 100% sure. Also I still need to upgrade springs in rear to handle the load. Guy said dry weight the trailer is 6500 not sure if that is correct but lets say I run maybe and I mean maybe another 3500 extra weight to include water, gas, and then camping gear no quads do you think my truck can pull this with no issues? Also what would be recommended things to do to the Ex to know it will handle it. I have a 2005 F350 Dually Diesel with 6.0 so I know that will have no issues but again that might be sold soon so I don't want to count on that as my tow vehicle.
I'd be surprised if that trailer is only 6500 dry. As far as the water damage, look it over GOOD. I agree with you, don't pay anywhere near that asking price with water damage. Your Ex can tow that , but will need a few mods to do it comfortably. Look at a spring swap and / or an air spring kit, rear sway bar, etc. Lots of reading on this site about how to make a great tow rig out of an Ex.
Yep, water damage may be a turn away! as far as towing it goes. are your tires load range "E"? if you have 35`s and stock gearing (probably 3.73`s) the X will have a hard time with the load. 3.73`s and 35`s will give you an effective final drive of around 3.55. not enough for towing a heavy trailer. I`m towing a 9200lb loaded TT and have stock size tires and 4.30`s. this does well. it wouldn't`t do so well with 35`s and definitely not at all with 3.73`s and 35`s!
As far as mods go, the first thing to do would be 4.56 gears at a minimum! maybe even 4.88? I could still run 4.56`s in mine without issue on the hwy. you will want some type of rear spring help, air bags, roadmaster active suspension etc. etc. then a rear sway bar if you don`t have one. and a very good WD hitch. I use a Reese Dual Cam and highly recommend it.
I`m assuming this is a toy hauler? so yes I would say that 3500lbs may be right figure on adding around 1500lbs to the dry weight for all your "stuff". my dry weight is 7100 lbs and my ready to travel weight is 9200lbs., mine is not a toy hauler either. so with your proposed trailer at around 10k lbs loaded and with what you have now, I would not do it!
Thanks for all your advice and turns out the trailer has severe water damage started in the front then moved its way all across the floor causing it to bow bad. Needs a complete over haul in the front to rear so not worth my penny. Maybe someone with carpentry skills and time could easily do it but I would not pay anywhere near $6800 or whatever that costs was. I didn't even bother negotiating damage was far more than I hoped. At least now I know that something similar or less will work just need the right upgrades to make it work..
I know that deal fell through, just as well actually, those Weekend Worriers were notorious for being well overweight from what they advertised, no way that thing ever weighed 6500lbs!
I run 35"s with 4.88 gears for and effective 4.39 ratio, if you run oversized tires and want to tow you have to regear or that V-10 will make you suffer. If your rear lift springs aren't rated for higher strength then you will also need some sort of suspension help, like air bags, RAS or more/better springs. And as 1Ex said make sure those 35"s are E load rated, rear axle weights can get pretty high with an EX pulling a decent sized trailer.
Our travel trailer is 41' long and weighs 11k+ lbs and our V-10 EX pulls it very well in all conditions. I have done several mods all of which were done to improve it's towing ability, in stock form it was nearly undriveable pulling a 9,500lb toyhauler. Whatever hitch you choose needs to be a top quality unit like 1EX's Dual Cam or a Hensley Arrow like I use, do not skimp on a WD hitch purchase, it is way too important!
