Need help ASAP!!! turn signals

OK here is the deal I have a 1986 Frod F150 Step-side. My turn signals front or rear are not working. The story behind it is a few days ago I noticed I had no tail lights. I went back there to look and found that the lights were not grounding themselves. What worked is when I took a wire from the harness and grounded it. Bingo I have lights and brake lights. Only problem is brake lights go dimmer when I step on the brakes with the lights on seems like something is backwards. There are three wires leaving each light, they are the square style lights, two of the are together and one is a single. Question I have is the single one leaving the light a ground? Cause I beleive that is the one I grounded. Also, would grounding the wrong wire in the rear turn the signals off in the front?? I thought they were one a different circuit. Hopefully someone can help. I tried replacing the flasher only found one, my 78 had two. Also checked the fuses, and changed bulbs. Just want to get this working!!!
Thanks for any replies,
Chris

3 wires out each light.
**********************

Let's see >Is this the driver's side light?

There should be a
single bulb for back-up light
2 filament bulb for Turn Signal/Brake Light/ & Running Lights

Because this is on the driver side they are hooked in parallel to get to the right side of truck.
Common ground is either one wire per side or it grounds through the assembly, I would think.

So that would explain the three wires leaving the lights. One wire is for the brakes, other is for the backup lights, and other is for the lights. So were is it grounded? Which wire would be used as the return?? So none of the wires leaving the light should be grounded?
THanks,
Chris

No, none of the taillight wiring should be grounded, the taillights ground by one of the studs to the taillight bracket, which in turn is grounded to the bed.
There are only 2 bulbs in these lights, one single filament backup, and, one dual for brake/turn and running lights.
both sides should ground independently.

Also, there are indeed 2 flashers, if you look at the fusebox, you will see that there is a second one(the one for your 4-ways) on the back side of the box opposite the one you changed.

If I dissconnect the rear lights from the main harness should my directionals in the front be working? If they aren't working could the problem be a bad switch? Also do the flashers use the same lines as the directionals? Cause they work.
Thanks,
Chris

Yes, the fronts should function independently from the rears, and, the flashers do use the same wiring, so, it probably is your switch.

There IS a ground wire from each bulb holder - it's screwed into the body inside the taillight opening with a green screw thru a ring terminal. The reflector is plastic, so there's no way for it to ground thru the housing.

Since I have no front or back directionals does this sound like a switch problem? If I dissconnect the lights from the main harness in the rear I should still get front directionals? Also if my hazards work does that mean my wiring is correct?
Thanks,
Chris

If none of them work, it could be the fuse, the turn signal cam, or the hazard switch (built into the turn signal switch inside the column).

Steve: This is a FlareSide, not a Fleetside, and, it uses big truck style taillamps, which have 3 mounting studs, and ground through one of them.
