I have all 3 setting in my driveway my 5.4 , my work truck w/7.3 both w/3.73 4X4's and the brother in law's 2000 v-10 Excursion w/4.30 4X4. My 5.4 is chipped and exhaust and a number of other things. And it does a fine job with a 7500 total weight work trailer but you do know its back there and my mileage is between 7-10 mpg depending on the type of driving (highway or backroads) to the job site, empty its between 13 and 16. The EX gets 10 to 11 and with the gear ratio, you dont even know its back there. And only gets 13 mpg empty on the highway. And the 7.3 is just amazing it gets 14 to 16 mpg and does even grunt at all with the trailer and gets 22 mpg on the highway empty. I never pulled with my 5.4 stock so I am not sure how a stock truck would do but I dont think the Mod's did that much, but I do have 33.5 tall tires on it so the stock truck would most likely do the same if not better. Needless to say I do use the 7.3 the majority of the time. Sorry for the long post but that is my experiance. And for the record my next truck will be the 6.0 there's nuthin like havin the power even if you dont use it. But that's a while down the road.
