Its been 3 years since my pickup last ran and since then a lot of work has been done to it so bear with me.
Its a 390 4 barrel and I replaced the factory carb with an Edelbrock 1406 performer. The truck starts up great, goes right to its fast idle and warms up. Runs smooth. I haven't touched the mixture screws but I have set the ignition timing to 10 degrees BTDC and adjusted the idle to what sounds right.
The truck remains running just fine with the hood open but if I close the hood, about 5 minutes later it starts sputtering and then dies. It is very hard to restart. Takes a lot of pumping the gas and keeping the starter engaged. Even then it only sputters a bit, and dies. If I open the hood up it restarts much easier and then remains running.
From what I can gather this is heat related and I am still learning about carburetors. Any ideas on some diagnostic methods for figuring this out or common places to look are appreciated.
No. Short history is I resealed the motor other than the rear main and oil pan. Then it sat for 3 years. Recently put on the carb, a new distributor, and got a running again. Fresh oil, tune up parts are all new, fuel filter new, etc etc.
