i have a 73 4/4 ford pickup i have had it a couple of years and the guy i bought it from asked did i want to sell the engine back to him.
out of it i told him no further talking to him
he told me that the motor is a 351 not a 351m that i thought it was .he said the motor is a hard to find motor and started talking about a 351windsor and a 351 cleveland and said that he put the motor in the truck and that it was the rare one of the two . my question is are there some quick visible things that i can see to tell me which motor i have for sure or do i need to get the id number off the block .where is the id on the block located if this is the info that i need im familiar with a chevy but not a ford thanks any info would be great

Count the valve cover bolts.

Check to see if the thermostat housing comes out of the intake manifold of out of the front of the block.

Also check the firing order stamped on the intake.
Get all this info and post the findings here on this thread.

If its the 351-C, it will have the T-stat going directly into the block (vertically) instead of the intake manifold, which would indicate a Windsor engine. If it is the actual "C" instead of "M", the deck behind the distributor will be flush with the distributor, whereas the "M" will be about an inch higher.

The 351/400M have 8 bolts on valve covers. Do a search there was a Post not long ago on them. I just know how to tell the M blocks easy by the cobver bolts. The 460/428 will have 7 bolts. If I remember right the W blocks are 6 bolts.
