2001 E150 4.6 V8 intermitten miss

I have replaced all coils, all plugs and now still have a miss--it started after I changed the coils so I went back and changed the plugs. Still there. It does not do it all the time and the service engine light does not come on like it did with coil troubles. I will go for some time without missing then all of a sudden start, then not do it for a few days then start again. Seems like it does it at higher speeds, over 40 more often and some times shows up just before a shift point or kicking into overdrive.

If the miss started after you replaced the coils, that would be the first thing to consider. Any possibility you have a bad wire connection onto any of the coils?

Also, are you sure it's an ignition miss and not a transmission shudder? My '02 E150 has had a bit of shuddering in its lifetime. First fix many years ago was a full trans fluid flush at the dealer. When it started again, I used a tube of Shudder Fixx in the fluid and it was like magic. It is the lockup torque converter doing the shuddering, and if yours is doing it near shift points, there is going to be some activity with the torque converter. How many miles on the van, and have you ever had trans issues? When was the last time you changed out the fluid?

I have blown out 2 coils between 100k and 115k miles ('02 E150 with 4.6, now with 123k miles) and as I recall the bad coils clearly showed on the OBD2 reader and gave me a miss pretty constantly when driving.

The CEL will light up almost always when an actual misfire is detected. A failed coil or even a bad connection from the engine wiring harness will trigger a DTC and be accessible via the OBD-II port just as YoGeorge suggests.

Because this shudder occurs more noticeably at speeds its unlikely to be COP related. Misfires that might be barely noticeable at idle in Park or Neutral but once in gear they're almost instantly noticeable---very rough idle.

ASAP I'd have the transmission DTC's read by someone with a scanner than goes that deeply into the OBD-II system. This will NOT be one of the free outfits like Auto Zone etc etc et al.
