i have a 77 ford f150 4x4 and am going to be adding 2" lift coils up front. my question is, what are you guys suggestion on shocks? i would like as confortable of a ride to be expected from just shocks because i don't belive in stiff shocks for off-roading. i also will be running 35" tires if that makes a difference. what does everyone think? prices on them and where to get them cheap would be helpful too.
Well, I'll throw in my recommendation of what not to buy. I put a set of Rancho RS5000's on my '85 Bronco. It made the thing ride like a tank on the road. WAY too stiff for my taste.
I have been satisfied with my Monroe's, but will look around for other shocks when I do my upgrade in the winter. The Sensatracs were a major improvement over the stock junk. I have flexed them and compressed them to the limit of my travel and they work well and come with a rubber flex boot to protect the piston shaft.
Some suggestions I have heard of are shocks with coils so you can adjust the pre-load, and tune the dampers. Since my truck is a part time off road/daily driver, I will steer clear of the Ranco's too. My biggest concern will be on springs and bushings. My .02. LOL
I had the rs5000's on my 79 f-150 and i thought it rode quite well. All my friends had leaf spring rigs so mine always rode better than theirs so maybe that was skewed judgement. I didn't mind them for the money.
I bought the Rancho RSX's because I had heard good things about them. The comments I hear from passengers on the trail is that it rides like a Cadillac. I have the Skyjacker 6" class II lift.
It the best for what? question that I went rounds with. I've heard they are on the stiff side when unloaded... I tow with several different load regularly...camper....boat....both...etc
that adjustable seemed to make more sense at least in theory... I have the in-cab adjuster coming next week...we'll see how well we can dial the ride on these Rancho's. I should get a set of the Bilsteins...then I would have first hand experience with three of the more popular shocks...Edlebrock, Rancho and Bilstein
