I went to the salvage yard today and found 4 stock underhood lights with wiring and I am trying to install it on my truck but it's not wanting to work... Did I not get everything needed for the light to work?
They have a blob of mercury in them. It makes contact and turns them on at the proper angle. If it does not work check for proper grounding and dirty contacts inside for the bulb.
Since it's hard to get into and somewhat delicate, I personally would bead blast the socket and coat it with dielectric grease. Carefull use of sandpaper may do the trick as well.
It's unlikely that the mercury isn't moving. If you're trying to get corrosion off the thing, a brush works wonders. Stainless steel should do great. Mix with elbow grease and you'll have it cleaned up in no time.
It IS possible that the little contacts that the mercury is supposed to bridge have become contaminated; in which case your options are to replace the light, remove the light or have something that doesn't work.
If you want something that just works no matter what, you can get a nice corded underhood light from a Chevrolet 1500 and a few other models. They are very generic, have a manual switch instead of the crappy mercury switch and have enough cord that on my truck, I can pull it all the way to the tailgate and stick on there with a magnet.
