99 supercab shortbox 4x4 snapping noise in front end ??
99 supecab shortbox 4x4
i have a "snapping" type of noise in my front end that i cant find the source of
is most noticable at low speed 30 or less on certain bumps but not every bump sometimes barely rolling at idle
also happens if i move the steering left and right quickly
and the strangest part is i get what i believe to be the same sound when i shift into reverse from a stop and accelerate quickly once if stop in reverse but dont shift out of reverse and quickly accelerate again it does not make the sound only the first time shifting into reverse
have checked upper and lower ball joints that are 4 year old moog always kept greased upper control arms are replacement moog installed 4 yrs ago complete with new bushings and new cam adjuster bolts
tie rods have no play and are 3-5 yr old
wheel bearings rt side is 1 yr old cheap 100$special and is tight left side is 7yr old genuine motorcraft and is tight
pitman arm and idler arm show a small amount of play where they connect to the drag link but not enough to make this type of sound
no sign of any movement where steering box bolts to frame or idler arm mount location
front shocks are rusty ..i have new ones but have not been able to get them put in yet
i looked the torsion bars over with a flashlight and dont see any sign of damage but if there was a problem with them or the "key" the truck prob would not sit level which it does..
lower control arms were in the truck when i got it .at 75k truck now has 149k ..im not sure how to go about troubleshooting a control arm problem
i have done my best to look over as much of the truck frame as i can see with a flashlight from inside and outside because here in upstate ROADSALT HEAVEN ny truck frames are known to break from time to time ...more often the import trucks with the closed box frames but it does also happen to fords chevs and dodges but i dont see any signs of a break
ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED....any common problems or some silly bracket that i keep looking right past or something else
