Creaking

Here's the story, I've always had a little speratic creaking from what seems to be the front end of my 90 F-150 4x4, but i've never been able to pinpoint it. Then I added a 4" Superlift. Now, the creak has gotten worse. It seems that whenever I apply the brakes and move the steering wheel, there's a very repititous creaking noise, which usually (not always) stops if I rev the engine or release the breaks (which can be hard with a clutch at a stoplight on a hill). It does do it without the brakes being applied, just not nearly as much. If i turn the wheels just right, it will usually do it too. I haven't noticed any problems while driving though....

Any help or ideas are greatly apreciated.

I have replaced front axle pivot bushings, radius arm bushings, coils, shocks, and pitman arm.

check the radius arm mounts at the frame, the rivots will work loose, put new bolts in the one on my 90 f150 becuse of noise on brake apply this fixed it.

This is something similar that was posted a few days ago and the owner found the 3 bolts holding the steering box to the frame were loose . That is also an area where the frame has cracked on older models causing the noise you hear . Have a look in that area and see what you find .

Paul also suggested checking the rivots that mount various components to the frame. I used a small hammer and starting tapping each one, listening for changes in sound. I found several that were loose. Then I put the truck on jack stands, relieving the suspension of all the weight. I found two more that were loose.

I've already replaced the Radius Arms rivets with Bolts when i replaced the radius arm brackets. Those rivets sure were a pain in the A$$, but my air chisel sure did help a lot. I checked the steering box, and the bolts were pretty damn tight, so i torqued them anyways. I checked the frame, it's boxed right there, pretty stout and no visible fractures. I'll make sure to check all the rivets for looseness.

I'm not a 4WD drive expert, but isn't there some sort of a track bar from the diff. case to the frame that keeps the axle from shifting side to side. I know the older solid axle 4X's had them with a bushing on each end ,and, those bushings would go out rapidly. Another area of strange noise/creacks/clunks is the front mount for the rear leaf spring. It seems that there is always a small gap between the bushing center and the frame bracket. This allows the leaf to move side to side which causes a noise when the metal bushing center contacts each side of the frame mount. The solution is to remove the bolt, put a thin washer on each side of the bushing, and reinstall and tighten down until the bracket quenches the spring bushing.
