I was looking into changing over to the EFI system for my old truck and thought I would ask if anyone has done this swap over and what sort of results am I looking at. The price seems a bit high but if the results are worth it I would like to try it. Any ideas and input would be nice.
I'm using Edelbrock's E-Street EFI as a returnless system. I like the idea of a tablet interface.. it's useable as a regular tablet and as an engine monitor with TONS of info and control. For example, the tuning display provides among other info RPM, AF mixture, coolant temp, fuel pressure, and vacuum - gauges ya don't need to buy separately. It also serves as a programmable fan controller. Again, an item that is not needed to be purchased on top of the conversion.
The other options on the market include MSD Atomic, EZ-EFI 1.0, EZ-EFI 2.0, QuickFuel EFI, and Holley Terminator.
EZ-EFI 2.0 is compatible with power adders. The rest of them, including the E-Street, are not.
Advantage?.. It starts right up, idles smooth, and waaaay less fussy than any carb. It saves fuel and adjusts for changing altitude because of the wideband 02 sensor. MPG gains are marginal.. typically 2 to 3 mpg. I haven't logged any miles yet but for me it is worth it already.
does all these systems require 4v intake or just replace the intake altogether
All of the systems above are intended to replace a 4V carb.
Holley does offer a 2V system called "Avenger EFI"... however, the price is still up there. In my opinion, ya might as well go 4V to maximize the dollars spent. The Avenger is shown as adaptable to a 4V intake but that's putting a band-aid over a gushing wound. Plus it only supports up to 275 HP... The others above can support 500+ typically.
well checking on prices the atomic tbi by msd looks impressive with self learning and programmable features but has a hefty price tag around 2800. I have been saving for a paint job. decisions .. decisions
