2005 Explorer 4.0 Engine Problems
2005 Explorer 4.0 V6 115k miles. Just had timing chains done.
I keep having this noise/issue with the motor I cannot get an answer as to what is wrong. I have had the truck to the dealer 4 times and they keep giving me the run around.

Man that sure sounds like a bad timing chain tensioners. The spring loaded, oil fed screw in deals front and rear. Did they get replaced along with the chain guides? You can do them from the outside without opening anything. FWIW, my old 2004 explorer with over 220K miles on it isnt that loud and its never had anything done to it. Our 2010 Mountaineer makes a bit more noise, but always has and now has 106K on it. I have heard fuel injectors make that sound, but not that loud.

Front timing chain and tensioner--driver side, you must take off lots of stuff to get to it.
Rear timing chain and tensions--passenger side, you must remove engine or at least the trans to get to it. Doing it with the engine in the vehicle from underneath and behind...you really gotta want to suffer to do it that way.

check YouTube. You can see it done through the wheel well opening. Didn't look too bad. On my 2010, the drivers side is right there in plain sight and doesn't look hard at all. Granted, I haven't needed to pull it yet. I am just talking about the spring loaded oil fed tensioning devices. They can go bad by themselves with a weak spring.
