Hey guys long time reader first time poster , I have a 2012 e250 with 33,000 miles that stays running when I turn back ignition and remove key , I've tried to pull out the ignition harness and the truck remains running , so I guess that rules out the ignition . I'm guessing that there is a relay or something stuck somewhere that is keeping the ignition circuit energized. Also when the truck remains running with out key I can put it in drive and driveway with no issues . Please any input would be great
I left it running the other night but usually I'll drive it and it will work fine for a while. But I haven't really had success with getting it to shut off . And it doesn't matter if it's a short or long drive it happens randomly
I was about to suggest it was the sliding portion of the ignition switch itself but since pulling the chassis wiring harness connector doesn't shut it off this is very, very confusing.
If you're able to access the switch itself and try manipulating it without the key cylinder lock rod checking if that has any effect. If not something beyond my understanding is causing this.
One would think removing the electrical path would cause a shut down.
Is this a gas or diesel? And when you pull the key does anything go off, i.e. radio, air conditioning?
This is a strange one. How long have you had the truck? Is it used? Could be some tricky custom wiring if so. Now a days the fuel pump should kill the engine when the key is cut unless it was wired around the ignition.
Hmm.. Im gonna need you to answer a little more of my question. Are you the only one that has owned this van? Do you see anything when you look around under the dash or hood that doesn't look like factory installed wiring?
I had a expedition that I installed a custom remote start on and in the winter it would start my truck sometimes when the outside temp got to a specified temp to charge the battery. I had to turn this off but the system deteriorated at some point and I couldn't control it anymore, but it had full control over my engine.
If you have a manual, check it and pull some relays. Do them one at a time so you can hopefully find which system is faulting. I would start with fuel system and then ignition, mainly because the the fuel system would normally be first to need repairs.
Yes I should have stated I did car audio for ten years so I did check for any modifications and yes there is a remote starter installed but I have isolated it since the problem started to rule out any doubt . Also I purchased the van used with 9,000 miles on it from a ford dealer . It looks like the van used to be a UHAUL van based on the running boards. Also it's a gas engine 4.6 liter
I say you should go try pulling fuses and relays related to the engine and even the ignition switch itself to see if anything changes, then report back here and we can do a little more research. Be sure to take note of how long, if at all, it takes the engine to shut off and what you did that caused it to shut down.
Also, can you start the thing back up if you can get it to shut down? And does unpluging the battery help? If so you may just need to go get a starter solenoid and put it not the battery, then put a switch on the dash to kill the connection for the time being until we can solve your problem.
It always starts back up fine , I did try to pull the battery cables and nothing because I would assume the truck is running off of the alternator at that point . I have gone through the manual and noted all relays that have anything to do with ignition or start or run . I've had to shut it off a few times and it's been fine this afternoon but I'm sure it will do it again at any moment
