Dana 60 Swap

Hey, I know it's been a while since I've posted here. Sorry about that, haha.

Anyway, I got a line on a Dana 60 today, and I'd like to install it in my truck. However, I need to know what all I'm going to need to get that done. I know that I'll need the springs and steering linkages. Any more information and/or advice would be appreciated. I plan to rebuild it and dress it up before I put it in my truck, so I would also like any advice about what I should do before I install it.

Thanks in advance.

In case it's not in my signature, I have a '96 F250, and the Dana 60 in looking at has kingpins, if that matters.

Edit: Yeah, I'm posting from a tablet, but when I "view full site", I see that I do not, in fact, have a signature. As soon as I get to a desktop, I'll get one going that's at least twice as hardcore as my old one. In the mean time, it's still the same truck as before, for those who remember.

Good to see that you guys remember me. I hadn't forgotten you guys, just been focused on other things and been working a lot.

Guy knew it would be going in an F250, and when I asked how much he wanted for it, he said, "[number indicating asking price] everything u need". So since he's offering it with everything I need, I need to know everything that entails.

I want to do this thing right, so I'm going to take my time on it. I'll probably use this thread to show what I'm working with and what I'm doing, and to ask any questions that I have.

This one comes with 4.10 gears. My truck has 3.55 gears. I'm wanting to put lockers in it, though, so that may or may not be relevant. Again, I'm not sure what that entails.

To make a long story short, I'm about ready to get in way over my head again, and I'm asking you guys to help me out like before. If reps are still a thing on here, I offer them to all who are willing to help my sorry soul. Lol

Thanks, guys.

Edit: By the way, what's a good price for a used D60? I'd like to know if I'm in the neighborhood.

And I'm wanting to say that if I make a reply in "full site" mode, it will have my signature on it.

Edit: Boom

Around here people are stupid high.
I have seen on c.l. 15-1700 but in the 1k$ range I think is normal.

If I can do anything to help you know I will.
You still have my #?
I have changed phones so many times I have lost your number.

Alright, I'm right on your "normal range", Aaron. Good deal. I've got good feelings about this.

What's up Joseph? Long time no see.

Around here, a good D60 will bring $800-$1k complete (hub to hub) with the parts you're needing. They can be had for less than that, but you have to know where to watch, and be ready to jump.

So yeah, you'll need:
The axle (hub to hub)
F350 Springs (or an RSK with SD springs to give some lift and ride better)
The steering linkages (Tie rod and drag link)
The pittman arm off the F350 steering box
The track bar and the bracket that bolts to the engine cross member to mount the track bar
And the kicker... 4" rear spring blocks and longer U-bolts (otherwise you'll be spotting racoons in trees with your headlights).

For a locker install, you'll probably be looking at buying a ring and pinion and then you'll probably want to pay someone to set it up for you so you have the preload and tolerances right. Be careful with what locker you pick for the front end too, as you will want something that slips enough to let you turn a corner!

If it were me (spending your money) I would plan on doing an RSK and some SD springs in the front because it will improve the ride quite a bit and give you another 1.5 or more of lift. I'd also plan to replace all the seals, bushings and bearings in the axle while you're in there.

Sounds like a great project!

If our donor is king pin then you are changing from one brake size to another. Rotors on the '95 and newer are slightly larger and the calipers attach differently.

I think this just means buying brake lines for a pre '95 (you will likely want longer or new ones anyway) but I'll let others with more knowledge guide you.

He says that it came out of a 1990. He also says that he's got another one if I don't like the one in the ad.

You mean brake hoses, not lines, right? I just replaced all of the hard lines on the truck, haha.

Yeah, hoses. One thing I learned about the hoses is the '95+ drivers hose has a tee fitting built in for the hard line going to the passenger side. The ones you'll need don't have that so you'll have to get one that's the right size.

I rebuilt mine with an ARB and 3.73 gears. I like the setup.
