2005 5.4 question

I have a 05 5.4 FX4 that I've owned for about 3 months. It is using about a quart of oil every 1500 miles. It has about 85000 miles. I am using the recommended 5w 20 in it. This seems very excessive to me. I have heard that a quart every 1000 is acceptable, but I've never owned a vehicle that has burned this much oil. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem. The truck runs great otherwise. Is there anything I can do to help the situation, heavier oil, high mileage oil, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

That is kind of excessive. Are you getting any blue smoke on start-up? Or any black soot inside of the tailpipe? Heavier oil would help, but it is advised not to be used due to the VCT system needing a light weight oil for proper flow. Could possibly be a bad PCV valve, or maybe worn valve seals or guides, or maybe even just worn piston rings. A less likely cause would be sludge in the oil control rings on the piston preventing them from expanding as the engine heats up, causing excessive oil burning. Blue smoke on start-up for a few seconds could point to the valve seals. Also check for drips and check the back side of the valve covers. Modular engines are known for leaks back there where you can't see it.

My engine is doing the same. Not blowing any smoke though. It's like the oil is magically disappearing over time. Swap out your PCV valve. That might solve the problem outright. That's what I'll be doing soon.

I have read that the pcv valve is built right into the valve covers on these trucks and is not considered a maintenance part. That is where I was going to start. Is this true?

Yes, it is plugged right into the top of the passenger side valve cover. A PCV valve is always a maintenance item though. Put it this way. A modern timing chain should last the life of an engine and not be a maintenance item, but lo-and-behold the 5.4L is famous for sometimes needing a new one of those.
