Hey all,
If anyone knows what the best things to do to my 460 to get more low end torque, that would help a lot. I have a 79 Ranchero with a 460, and i was told we get going with low end torque and not high RPM horsepower. Your suggestions will be much help. Thanks
Danny
Straight up timing chain set or pre 72 timing set, dual 2.5 exhaust with H pipe, MSD 6A ignition to burn everything a holly 750 will put in it. That's all pretty easy to do without really going into it. I've been told the stock intake makes good low end torque, but a stealth is a bit lighter (ok, a bunch lighter) and does a real good job. I am building one like this but it will have a cam with around a .487 to .508 lift, and around 9:1 to 9.5:1. This is going into a 4x4 truck I will use to pull and play. Oh yeah, remove the exhaust bump and a little work on the exhaust ports will make a 460 breath much better!!! I am doing that too. Hope this helps or gives you some ideas. You've come to the right place to get some info. These guys here have a lot to offer!!!

The stock intake is as good as any aftermarket piece up to 3000rpm. Check the ratio of your differential gears. My brother has a Ranchero with an SCJ and the car originally came with 3.08s. Just going to 3.50 or higher will make a big difference with the dual exhast and timing gear assembly change.
Might try a good spread bore 4 barrel. You want small primaries for low end torque and big secondaries for high end. If some one makes a good dual port manifold for the 460 that might be worth a try. Dual ports are essentially two manifolds in one. They have two sets of runners to each cylinder. One set has small ports and the other has large runners for similar reasons like the spread bore carb. Offenhauser used to make these, don't know who does not.
If you are willing to go into the engine there are lots of things you can do, but it would take a book to discuss them in any detail.
