Transmission question
My son has a 2001 Escape with the v6, The transmission has developed a massive leak. It did so in our driveway so the vehicle has not been driven low on fluid. It was taken to a mechanic to diagnose. He said that a metal plate on the transmission has rusted thru and that is where the leak is. He removed the screws holding it on, but was not able to remove the plate although it did rotate a small amount. He has little knowledge about this particular transmission, so he called a place that said the transmission would need to be opened to replace the plate. I am not sure he is correct since there were several bolts/screws holding it on. If it were held on from the inside it should not require external bolts in my opinion. The vehicle belongs to my son as i said, he is 17 and has no job so i really do not wish to put a lot of money back into the vehicle. So i was hoping someone here has a little knowledge of this transmission and could tell me if there is a plate available or if i am in a transmission swap only situation. Thanks
