Going to to some work on my 1982 e350 motorhome with 460.
Headers, what can you guys recommend. My current system is manifolds (leaking) into a y-pipe and then 2.5 inch exhauset. I've heard good things about thorley try-y. Remember this is a van body with a c6 tranny.
Also my air injection that goes into the back of my heads is frozen up. I'm going to remove it. What can I put in the back of the heads? Freeze plugs?????
Don't worry about emmisions, rv can without cats and I only drive 2k miles a year with it so not worried about environment
I don't have any suggestions for headers on your RV except to say that tri-Ys aren't all they're cracked up to be. Thorley makes a good quality header though.
Regarding the air injection tubes in the heads, Ford sells a threaded insert to plug the holes in case you don't have the air pump or need to use the hole for accessories. I'd give you a part # but I can't seem to find my package of inserts. They thread into the head although you may have to clean up the threads since they are probably gummed up with carbon deposits. I removed the air injection on a 5.0 Mustang I had and the holes in the heads were almost completely plugged up. I reamed them out with a screwdriver then used a battery brush to clean up the threads.
BTW, those inserts are cheap. If I remember right they were $1-$2 each.
Go to a michine shop that does head work and ask for 11/16 freeze out plugs. They can be tapped in without too much effort. I had to put new heads on my 460,also in a motorhome, because there was so damage from the exhaust manifolds warping. I am also installing tri-wye headers with 2.5 inch dual exhaust, a weiland intake and edelbrock tbi fuel injection. It's not done yet so I'll see how it works out. I also left off the air pumps. Hope to have it done before the summer is over. I hope this helps. Jack
Well I will suggest staying away from freeze plags and installing pipe plugs. You should be able to get the the back of the heads since the engine is in the van motorhome and tap the holes. The freeze plugs have a tendancy to pop out after a while due to high exhuast pressures if you do a lot of hill climbing with it. It might cost you $5.00 more now but that beats having to listen to your exhaust leak as you drive to get the freeze plug replaced.
I have a class A, and recently put Hedman Elite headers on, they fit well, had the A.I.R. tubes already welded on, are 14 gage tubing and are ceramic coated. I am really happy with the results, although I have heard nothing but positive comments from those who went with Thorley's. If you have more money and want a performance package Gibson and Banks offer them, otherwise I'd talk to summitracing.com about Hedman or Thorley. As for the tri-Y design (Thorley), I wouldn't have them on my hot-rod, but they work well for the MH application (high torque at low RPM) and are certainly a dramatic improvement over the factory log manifold. All the MH headers are 1.75" primary, 14 gage, long tubes with a ball flange collector. I would also recomend some new plug wires and Taylor fire sleeves (or DEI fire boots) as the headers get hot enough under load to burn plug wires.
I think I'm going to have to look at the heads once I take off the air injection stuff. I don't think my heads are threaded, I think the air injection stuff is just pushed in the back and held on with a clamp.
