I have a '92 F150, 4.9L, M50D. How do I tell what type of rear differential is in my truck? Limited slip vs. whatever else they put in these trucks. I want to make sure I am running the right kind of rear diff lubricant. Thanks for any insight you can give me.
You can look up the code on the door jamb under "axle code" and post it here or look it up.
You can crawl under the truck, there should be a tag bolted to the diff. The bottom row(I think bottom row) should have something like 3 55 or 3L55. Usually the first number is hidden by the bolt. The L stands for limited slip.
You can jack up the rear end, one side and see if you can turn the tire easily, with the truck in gear. If you can turn it, it is an open diff.
You can take the back cover off the diff and there would be clutch packs and a whole bunch of stuff other than the spider gears, etc.
Personally, the first option would be my choice. You can also call a local dealer and ask for the parts department. They can tell you what the code stands for.
ok where can I find a code sheet showing what type rear i have. This is my first Ford and you guys have been so helpful its not funny. My axle code is a 17 and the tranny code is a U.
