Rear differential?

I have a '92 F150, 4.9L, M50D. How do I tell what type of rear differential is in my truck? Limited slip vs. whatever else they put in these trucks. I want to make sure I am running the right kind of rear diff lubricant. Thanks for any insight you can give me.

You can do one of many things.

You can look up the code on the door jamb under "axle code" and post it here or look it up.

You can crawl under the truck, there should be a tag bolted to the diff. The bottom row(I think bottom row) should have something like 3 55 or 3L55. Usually the first number is hidden by the bolt. The L stands for limited slip.

You can jack up the rear end, one side and see if you can turn the tire easily, with the truck in gear. If you can turn it, it is an open diff.

You can take the back cover off the diff and there would be clutch packs and a whole bunch of stuff other than the spider gears, etc.

Personally, the first option would be my choice. You can also call a local dealer and ask for the parts department. They can tell you what the code stands for.

Thanks for the reply. The axle code on my truck is 18. Is this a limited slip diff? If not what type of lubricant should I be using?

Thanks

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...52B%25252Bcode

A search revealed this. It is 3.05 gears and an open(non-limited slip) rearend.

80W90 gear oil should be fine for it without any additives.

This link has those charts in the information section, but put "f150" in the Model field; not "f-150". Also, this page and this PDF direct from Ford.
