desperate question need answered quickly

Evening ya'll,
I have a time sensative question for anyone, and ahead of time thank you for the info.

I need to tow my f150, can my 5.4l triton 2wd excursion handle it on a flat bed trailer?

Thanks,
Boomer

It will tow it easily, Excursions can handle towing almost 12,000 lbs, your 5.4 should be safe up to 8,000 lbs. As with any car trailer make sure you have trailer brakes and load the truck on the trailer forward.

Roger that, very much appreciated. How would you say to judge if the limits of the motor are being pushed?

Thanks,
Boomer

Even with a 5.4 you are not going to push the limits of the motor pulling that F-150, there are members of this forum that pull decent sized fifth wheel campers behind their 5.4 SD trucks. Leave it in OD unless it starts to do a lot of hunting up/down from OD to 3rd gear and just take it easy, leave extra room for stopping and take your time. You DO have a trailer brake controller or are you using a U-Haul type unit with surge brakes?

The trailer has surge type brake system. Ive used it before and had no issues, just wasnt sure about a load of this weight behind this set up. I have many miles on and off road towing, trailer and other. The reassurance is very helpful with a less familiar vehicle.

Thanks,
Boomer

I've towed a lot of crazy stuff. Once I towed a V10 TDi VW Toureg with a Dodge Durango using a UHaul car hauler that probably weighed 4k lbs by itself. The Toureg weighs about 6k lbs (~10k lbs total) and the Durango is only rated at 8500 lbs. It didn't stress the engine at all. The issue is the transmission, differential and brakes. Put your transmission in "Tow" mode so you don't overheat your fluid by hunting for gears or trying to run in OD.

The differential and brakes are common across the SD/EX family with all motors and pulling an F-150 on a U-Haul trailer shouldn't present any issue for them.
His 5.4 Excursion's trans (4R100) doesn't have a "Tow mode", that's a Torq-Shift (5R110) 5 speed feature, gasser EXs never saw the 5 speed. The 4R100 is designed to tow in OD and only needs to be shifted down to 3rd if it's hunting between OD and 3rd frequently.

I have learned that almost any truck can tow damn near anything and be fine. The issue comes when it is time to stop whatever you are pulling. In a pinch I have towed things with vehicles that probably should not have been. But, if the engine can pull it and the brakes can stop it...you're good.
