Fe timing cover

Im putting a cam in a friend of mines 390 for him and theres a piece on the crankshaft that i found after pulling the balancer thats too bit fir the cover to slip over and i cant get it off and clue?

That doesn't make any sense. If the FE is anything like my cleveland, once you have the balancer off, the crank is only like 1-1/2" diameter. The crank seal rides on the balancer on my engine. So there is absolutely nothing left that would prevent the timing cover from easily passing over the crank. As seal diameter is close to 2" or so.

Behind the balancer (6312) is its spacer (6359). The spacer and the balancer are retained in place on the crankshaft with a 1/4" x 3/4" keyway (358963-S).

The spacer, keyway, oil slinger (6310) and timing cover are the same for all 1958/76 FE engines.

The timing cover seal (6700) is the same for all 1963/76 FE engines.

They usually slide right off. It might be varnished on or some one previous damaged it in some way. I would say try a bearing clamp and a puller.
