Parking light problems:(

Ok I'm working on a 69 F600.
My question is why do my front parking lights work when I pull the light switch to the first position but when I pull to the second and final position( headlights on) they shut off.
Also I don't have any dash lights in either position. But I have rear parking lights in both light switch positions. Switch is new and bulbs are new
Thanks

Rear parking lights are the regular tail lights, right?

Few vehicles of that vintage kept the parking lights on with the headlights.

Dash lights--start at the switch and check until the juice stops, then fix the fuse, wire or bulbs.

you didnt upgrade to LED light bulbs in the exterior lights did you? main reason i ask was because ive read of a lot of instances where in the older vehicles they caused problems similar to what your describing. If not.. then id take a volt/multimeter and check the back side of the switch to make sure you getting juice coming out in both positions. Ive actually had brand new switches that were bad right from the store..

from your description though it sounds like either bad switch or short in the wiring. Dash lights could be a burned out fuse. Even though they run through the same switch the dash lights themselves tend to have a separate fuse.

That's the way the parking lamps are supposed to operate.
This is a FAQ in the 1961/66 & 1967/72 forums. The thing is, either the members of these forums have forgotten, or are "young un's" .. not old enough to recall that...

There's nothing wrong, as this is the way things worked back then.

Parking lights turn off when the switch is in the 2nd position. All trucks, Passenger Cars, Bronco's and Econolines from this and previous era's operated the same way.

Inside the headlamp switch is a round ceramic rheostat...that when the switch is turned, dims the dash lights. It probably has cracked apart, which is a common occurrence.
