Is this normal for ECT?

Hey guys,

This is my first winter with my 6.0. Not sure if the thermostat is bad or not or if this is just normal for the colder weather. I drive 20ish miles to work and barely break 170*. Its mostly stop and go though, a lot of sections not getting over 5mph. When it does break free, it'll go up. It still won't break 180 because I get to sit in traffic again and it drops back to just below 170. Outside temps are usually below 30*. It's a tad worse when it's below 20*. This past fall and summer, normal temps were around 200* +/- 2 or 3*. Should I expect to see the similar temps no matter the outside temps?

Normal yes. Ford stats are junk, only last about a year. Get you a mishomoto 200 deg one.

Yep your thermostat is junk, I had the same problem. Replaced it and now its 180-190. Got a little better gas mileage too

I thought probably. Where's the best place to get the mishomoto 200? Is it just a drop in replacement?

Hey Mark! Sounds pretty typical for the stock thermostat. They tend to begin reducing operating temperature over time. A new factory unit will bring your temperatures up a few degrees. If you would prefer to upgrade from that unit, our high temperature (200 degree) unit will bring your operating temperatures up even higher. This will provide improved cabin heat, better fuel mileage, and a smoother running 6.0L.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Check with our vendors for the best available pricing on the 6.0L thermostat. A quick google search of our part number (MMTS-F2D-03H) should bring up a few results. This unit is a drop-in replacement, although some have reported concerns with aftermarket thermostat housings.

Check out the post below for installation instructions.

John,
Thanks for the info. I'm seriously considering going this route. I see in the forum that you linked to that there are some housings that don't work. Is there any way of telling what housing I have, and if this thermostat will fit for sure, without tearing out the old. I'd like to know ahead of time if I need to get the rt-1169 housing as I'm planning on ordering all the parts online at once. FYI, the main job I'm doing is replacing the oil cooler and I'm gonna do this while it is apart.

There technically isn't an RT-1169 "housing"

There is the OE "C92" housing and an OE "C91" housing.

The C91 is the later housing and the one that normally works with the Mishimoto t-stat.

Although some have been able to use the C92. I found with an extra C92 housing I had it took some work to trim away the central locating nub to get the t-stat to seat properly.

Pretty broad statement. My original still holds 184 this winter after holding 200 when towing this summer. You might want to rethink this statement.

You should also rethink parts of this statement. I was about one over to trying the Mishimoto but believe I will reconsider.

If your 192*stat is holding at 184*....it's not doing too good. The concensus is the old "original" stats held up well...but it seems the ones you buy nowadays won't hit 192 from the get go after installing it (it happened to me, so I know. I installed a new Ford 192 stat last year, and it would only get me 184-186. )

184 is unacceptable for a modern Diesel engine.

Where did you find the figure of 192? Ford never published that as a guide per my understanding. I would not call a thermostat holding at 184 after 12 years junk as the posters are. I have a new Ford thermostat I plan to install when the weather is good. I will let you know how it does.

A stock Ford stat is 192°. It is stamped 89° C right on it. (C = celsius, which converts to 192° F)

Hopefully you have luck with the new one, most people don't.
