Im getting rid of my 7.3 diesel in my 93 F 350. Does anyone know if I can use the diesel ZF 5 speed with a 460? I believe I have most everything else worked out. Has anyone else done this?
Thanx ,

as I understand it the bellhousing pattern is about the same, the dowels are larger ? Also where are you going to bolt the starter ? Doesn't the diesel starter mount on the block ? the 460 starter goes on the transmission on an auto anyways..
It has been suggested that the ZF is the same tranny for 460 and diesel. The theory is, if you use the diesel, you don't use the starter bolt holes in the trans. Supposedly an adapter plate is used to make the diesel fit existing ford transmissions. Didin't early 6.9's use C6's? can anyone confirm or deny?

well,,,simply put,, the holes don't line up. The top two will, but the rest including the dowel pins don't line up. I finally had to buy a ZF for a 460.
P.S. If you are looking in a wrecking yard,, an easy way to tell if it's gas or diesel,,, check to see if the bellhousing has holes for the starter to mount to. A diesel trans won't.
